Japanese packaging is designed with great consideration for the user. Some might even be a bit over-engineered! 😂
Let me introduce you to a few examples today.

日本のパッケージは、使う人のことをよく考えて工夫されています。中にはやり過ぎかなぁと思うものもありますが😂
今日はいくつか紹介しますね。
Easy Opening Features
Most products have guides that allow you to open them without using scissors.
開封の機能
ハサミを使わなくても開封できるよう、ほとんどの商品にガイドがついています。
■ Items with serrated edgeson the package
■袋の端がギザギザになっているもの
■ Packages with clear instructions on where to open. Having a “Open Here” mark eliminates any confusion.
■どこから開けるのか、書いてあるもの。「ここから」とか印があると、迷いませんね。
Moisture Prevention Features
Convenience Store Onigiri
I was impressed when I first saw the packaging of convenience store onigiri.
The nori (seaweed) doesn’t get moist as it doesn’t touch the rice until right before eating. Being able to enjoy the crispy texture – whoever thought of this is a genius 👍✨
For first-timers, just follow the numbered instructions.
コンビニのおにぎりのパッケージを初めて見たときは感動しました。
食べる直前まで、ご飯につかないので、海苔が湿気ません。パリパリとした食感を楽しめるなんて、これを考えた人は天才です👍✨
初めて食べる人は、番号順にやってみてね。
Resealable Bags
Items meant to be used over several days often come with a resealable zipper to prevent moisture.
I found it very convenient when large bags of potato chips started coming with zippers. I used to always buy small bags because I hated them getting stale.
But I ended up eating too much, so I’ll refrain from buying the large bags next time 😂
何日も使うものには、湿気を防ぐチャックがついていることがあります。
ポテトチップの大袋にチャックがついているのは、とても便利だと思いました。湿気るのが嫌で、いつも小さな袋を買っていたからです。
でも結局食べ過ぎてしまったので、次回からは大袋を買うのはやめておきます😂
Keeping Hands Clean
Natto packages include sauce packets that are separated from the natto by a plastic divider.
This is helpful, but it can be a bit troublesome when your hands get dirty while opening the sauce.
This package was designed to pour the sauce without getting your hands dirty.
I thought it was a great idea. However, I did encounter a small issue. I always wash and dry the packages before disposing of them, but the part containing the sauce is difficult to clean.
It’s a shame because the material could be recycled if it weren’t for the residue.
納豆のパッケージの中には、タレが入っています。タレは納豆につかないようにビニールで仕切られています。
これは助かるのだけど、タレを開封するときに手が汚れてしまうのには、ちょっと困ります。
このパッケージは手を汚さず、タレをかける工夫がされていました。
すごいアイデアだと思いました。ただちょっと困ったこともあります。パッケージを捨てる前にいつも洗って乾かしているのですが、タレが入っている部分が洗いにくいのです。
汚れがなければリサイクルできる材質なのに、残念に思いました。
Recyclable Waste Innovations
Speaking of recyclable waste, bottle caps and labels can also be recycled if sorted properly.
I appreciate the perforated lines on pet bottle labels that make them easy to remove.
リサイクルゴミと言えば、ペットボトルのキャップやボトルのラベルも分別をすれば、リサイクルできます。
ペットボトルのラベルをはがしやすいように、ミシン目がついているのは、やはりありがたいです。
Fortune-telling Labels
This product had a little surprise on the back of the label.
It came with a fortune-telling game. It’s a clever way to turn a burden into a small joy.
Recently, some products have eliminated labels altogether, removing the sorting burden entirely.
この商品にはラベルの裏側にちょっとしたサプライズがありました。
なんと、おみくじがついていたのです。負担をちょっとした喜びに変える工夫ですね。
最近ではラベル自体をなくし、分別の負担をなくした商品も出てきました。
Left-handed Packaging?
This package surprised me a bit. It had instructions saying “Right-handed people open here, left-handed people open here.”
It might be a bit excessive 😅
Perhaps the package developer is left-handed.
このパッケージにはちょっと驚きました。右利きの人はこちらから、左利きの人はこちらから開けてください、との記載がありました。
ちょっとやり過ぎな気もしますね😅
このパッケージの開発者さんは左利きなのかもしれませんね。
