Hello. With cooler mornings and evenings, Japan has finally entered the autumn season. This time, I’ll talk about a traditional sweet called “Kuri no Shibukawani” (Candied Chestnuts) that my mother always makes when autumn comes.
My parents live in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, located in the Shikoku region of Japan. Imabari City is situated at the endpoint of the Shimanami Kaido, a bridge connecting Hiroshima Prefecture on Honshu (Japan’s main island) with Ehime Prefecture. The Shimanami Kaido is famous for its beautiful scenery and is a popular spot for cycling enthusiasts as it allows stops at small islands along the way.
私の両親は、日本の四国地方にある愛媛県の今治市に住んでいます。今治市は、本州（日本の主要な島）の広島県と愛媛県を結ぶ「しまなみ海道」という橋の終点に位置しています。しまなみ海道は美しい景色で有名で、小さな島々に立ち寄ることができるため、サイクリング愛好家に人気のスポットです。

Imabari City is blessed with a mild climate and rich nature, known for its delicious citrus fruits (like mikan oranges) and fish. It’s also a region famous for its shipbuilding industry and towel production.
今治市は温暖な気候と豊かな自然に恵まれており、柑橘類（みかんなどの果物）と魚がとても美味しいことで知られています。また、造船業やタオル生産でも有名な地域です。
Fresh Vegetable Market
When autumn comes, my parents drive about two hours to a market to buy fresh chestnuts. At this time of year, red spider lilies (higanbana, autumn-blooming red flowers) bloom along the roadsides, making it a good season for taking walks.
秋になると、両親は車で2時間ほど離れた市場に、新鮮な栗を買いに行きます。この時期、道端には彼岸花（秋に咲く赤い花）が咲いており、散歩をするのにも良い季節です。
The market is filled with locally grown vegetables and fruits. I currently live in Kyoto, so I’m used to shopping at supermarkets there. That’s why I’m always surprised by the freshness and low prices of vegetables in Imabari. In Imabari, both fish and vegetables taste delicious even without complex cooking. I think this is because of the quality of the ingredients.
市場では地元で採れた野菜や果物がたくさん並んでいます。私は現在、京都に住んでいるため、京都のスーパーマーケットでの買い物に慣れています。そのため、今治の野菜の新鮮さや安さにいつも驚かされます。今治では、魚も野菜も複雑な調理をしなくてもとても美味しいのです。これは素材の質が良いからだと思います。
Every year, my parents distribute the candied chestnuts to family and friends as well. Therefore, my mother buys many large, shiny chestnuts. My mother’s eye for selecting chestnuts is almost professional-like, and I think she’s cool for that.
両親は毎年、栗の渋皮煮を家族や友人にも配ります。そのため、母は大きくて艶のある栗をたくさん買います。母の栗を選ぶ目は、まるでプロのようで、私はそんな母をかっこいいと思っています。
How to Make Candied Chestnuts
Making candied chestnuts is a very time-consuming process. Let me explain the method briefly:
栗の渋皮煮を作るのは非常に手間のかかる作業です。簡単に作り方を説明しますね。
1. First, boil the chestnuts for about 5 minutes to soften the outer skin.
1. まず、栗を5分ほど茹でて、外側の皮を柔らかくします。
The peeling process is very difficult, and even when I helped a little, my hands started to hurt. A few years ago, my father also started helping, quickly peeling the skin using large tweezers.
この皮むきの作業はとても大変で、私は少し手伝っただけでも手が痛くなりました。数年前から父も手伝うようになり、大きなピンセットを使って手早く皮を剥きます。
Autumn Flavors and Family Bonds
While you can buy candied chestnuts in stores, they don’t compare to my mother’s homemade ones. As it’s a luxurious sweet that requires a lot of effort, I savor it carefully. We freeze the leftover syrup and enjoy it as an adult sorbet in summer.
栗の渋皮煮は店で買うこともできますが、母の手作りの味には及びません。手間のかかる贅沢なお菓子なので、私は大切に頂きます。残った煮汁は冷凍して、夏に大人向けのシャーベットとして楽しみます。
My mother’s love-filled candied chestnuts that arrive from Imabari in autumn – I wonder if they’ll arrive soon this year. I’m really looking forward to it.
秋になると今治から届く、母の愛情がたっぷり込められた栗の渋皮煮。今年ももうすぐ届くかな。とても楽しみにしています。
